Sustainable choices in the hospitality industry: glassware, tableware, and packaging

In the hospitality industry, sustainability is no longer a trend, but an expectation — from guests, governments, and increasingly from hospitality entrepreneurs themselves. Fortunately, you don't have to compromise on style or quality to achieve it. In this guide, we show you which sustainable choices you can make regarding glassware, tableware, and packaging, and why these choices are also financially sound in the long term.

Investing in quality is sustainable

The most sustainable choice starts with purchasing: buy less often, but better. Cheap glassware that fades, breaks, or becomes uneven after six months costs more than quality glassware that lasts for five years. Choose:

  • Tempered glass that is resistant to machine washing and bumps
  • Brands that guarantee long-term availability so you can reorder
  • Timeless design that doesn't become dated quickly

Furthermore, brands like ONIS produce locally in Europe using energy-efficient production techniques and 100% recyclable packaging.

Reusable alternatives to single-use items

Plastic straws, disposable cups, and plastic cutlery are already banned or on the decline in many situations. Replace them with:

Tableware that lasts

Good porcelain is inherently sustainable — it can last for decades if you treat it well. When choosing tableware, opt for:

  • Chip-resistant porcelain with a hard glaze layer
  • Collections that remain available for a long time for easy reordering
  • Stackable tableware to make efficient use of storage space

At APS Glass & Bar Supply, we consciously work with European manufacturers. Much of our glassware and tableware is produced in the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, and the United Kingdom — short transport routes, lower CO₂ emissions.

Energy saving in the kitchen

While not directly related to non-food products, it is a relevant context: dishwashers at the right temperature, avoiding unnecessary cooling/warming equipment, and using short rinse cycles for glassware all contribute to a lower energy bill and a smaller ecological footprint.

Locally and European produced

A conscious choice for European-produced glassware and tableware means less transport, better control over working conditions, and a direct contribution to local economies. Read more on our page Produced in Europe.
