What is a grappa glass?

Grappa glasses are of course named after the grappa. This drink is traditionally served in matching glasses. Grappa is a traditional northern Italian drink. The drink is related wine. Grappa is made from the grape skins and pulp left over from winemaking. That may sound a bit disrespectful, but grappa is certainly not a second-rate drink. In fact, grappa has become very popular as a drink for real gourmets.

Just like wine, grappa is also served in specific glasses. A grappa glass has a characteristic, wavy and almost organic shape. The grappa glass is relatively small and stands on a high stem. The bottom of the glass is always wide. The wide bottom in combination with the high stem ensures that the grappa can always be served at the optimal temperature. Temperature is very important for the experience. Younger grappas are generally drunk at a temperature of 10 degrees, while for older grappas a temperature between 16 and 18 degrees is recommended.

Grappa glasses also flare at the top. This also has a reason: the wide opening allows the drinker to experience the aroma of the grappa to the maximum. Due to these specific properties, grappa glasses are also perfectly suitable for serving other aromatic aperitifs, dessert drinks or liqueurs.

Various types of grappa

Although grappa glasses are quite specific and are designed in a certain way for a reason, there are various types to choose from. This is partly due to the fact that grappa is drunk in different ways. Many people like pure grappa, but the drink is also regularly fortified or supplemented with other flavors or drinks, or used as a basis for a cocktail.

Different ways of drinking naturally require different grappa glasses. Modern grappa varieties are often served in a lower glass. For classic or pure grappa, a taller glass is used that you can hold by the stem. The amount served depends on the age of the grappa, but also on the moment of drinking. The drink can be used as an aperitif or to end a successful meal. The amount donated may then vary. This may also depend on the age of the grappa and the associated alcohol percentage.
